Youth Driving Ambition for Climate Adaptation through transformative innovations and leadership

Youth Pavilion, Sharm El-Sheikh

As the curtain closed on COP26 at the end of last year, young people’s engagement was finally recognized as a driving force in pushing for greater climate ambition and action.

Event Description:

The climate emergency is the greatest global health threat of our century. More than one billion people under 18 live in countries at extremely high risk of climate change, meaning their survival is significantly threatened. Almost all under 18s are exposed to at least one climate and environmental hazard, shock, or stress, such as heatwaves, cyclones, air pollution, flooding, and water scarcity. Those born in 2020 will experience up to a sevenfold increase in extreme weather events, especially heatwaves, compared with people born in the 1960s.

There is power in numbers, and it is time to tap into the potential of the world’s billion young people, because they are the present and the future. Addressing the climate crisis calls for innovation and collective action from young leaders. This group is at the forefront of the climate innovations that are accelerating locally-relevant and viable solutions.

Delivering transformative climate innovations and Youth leadership
With this context in mind, the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program, a joint program of the African Development Bank and the Global Center on Adaptation, designed the YouthADAPT Challenge to source and champion young leaders in Africa working to drive local climate action and raise climate ambition. At the same time, twelve members of GCA Youth Advisory Panel between the ages of 19-31 with diverse backgrounds and life experiences are empowering young people around the world to drive the climate adaptation agenda.
